Charissis’ Progress Is Slow

Share

There was hope that sophomore Kostas Charissis would show marked improvement from last season, but the reserve center continues to struggle.

In three games, Charissis has played 13 minutes and scored four points, all on free throws. He has more fouls (six) than rebounds (five), has no blocks or steals and three turnovers.

Most of Charissis’ problems appear to be self-inflicted--as in trying too hard--which is why Coach Henry Bibby said he will continue to be patient with his import from Greece.

“Don’t let his size deceive you,” Bibby said of the 6-foot-11, 250-pound Charissis. “He’s a European player and he’s still making the adjustment [to the American game]. I thought he had two very good exhibition games. He’s played well in practice.

“Sometimes the light comes on and kids don’t respond as quickly and they get a little nervous. Maybe he feels a little more pressure to perform. Next year will be the pressure year. . . . I’ve told him don’t worry about this year. Next year is your year.”

USC is off to a big start shooting from behind the three-point line. In three games, the Trojans have made 30 of 60 three-point shots, the most they’ve made to open a season since converting 31 of 77 in the 1992-93 campaign. That team finished with school records for three-point attempts (720) and three-point baskets (259).
