Pepperdine Knocks Off Anteaters in Water Polo

UC Irvine, ranked third in the nation in men’s water polo, rallied but fell short and lost, 7-6, to No. 8 Pepperdine in a nonconference game Saturday at UCI.

The Anteaters trailed, 5-2, with 3 minutes 44 seconds left in the third quarter, but responded with three unanswered goals, tying the score on John Dorfi’s penalty shot with 5:08 remaining in the game. The Waves (5-1) took a 6-5 lead before freshman Garrett Gentry tied it again with 3:43 to play. Greg Lonzo scored the winner on a penalty shot with 1:25 left.

Dan Klatt scored two goals and goalkeeper Dan Hipp had eight saves for the Anteaters (6-3).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Vanguard 1, Biola 0--Diego Goni scored his ninth goal of the season in the 73rd minute for Vanguard (5-3, 2-0).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Idaho 2, Cal State Fullerton 0--Jenny Kniss had a match-high 10 kills as the host Vandals (10-2, 1-0) prevailed, 15-6, 15-6. Leillani Williamsen, Be Holcombe and Jamie Ivers each had five kills for the Titans (4-10, 0-3).
