12 Convicts Dig Way to Freedom

Twelve convicts dug a 25-yard tunnel under the walls of a maximum-security prison in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and escaped, Interior Ministry officials said. The fugitives included Guram Absandse, a former finance minister accused of organizing an attack on President Eduard A. Shevardnadze two years ago, and Loti Kobalia, the ex-commander of forces loyal to the late President Zviad Gamsakhurdia.
