Nutty Beans

Hodo kwaja are charming little Korean cakes shaped like walnuts (hodo) and filled with sweetened red bean paste. You can watch them being made at the Korean Bakery just inside the new Hannam Food Court adjacent to Hannam Chain supermarket. A machine stuffs and bakes the cakes automatically, but a walnut piece is placed in each little cup by hand. Serve them with coffee or tea or alongside a fruit plate for dessert.

Hodo kwaja, $3 for 16 at Korean Bakery, 2738 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles (inside the Hannam Food Court). (213) 384-3635.
