* Re “Up Stage: Theaters Offer Variety of Plays, Musicals Before Holiday Season,” Theater Notes column, Sept. 28.

I am distressed that your theater reporter began his column with the assertion that “nothing opened last weekend . . . .” The same writer several years ago dismissed Teatro de las Americas and with this statement seems to be wishing it out of existence.

In fact, the opening of Teatro de las Americas’ production “El si de las Ninas” at the Petit Playhouse on Sept. 21 was listed in your Ventura County Calendar.

We don’t expect much from your writer, but pretending that this eight-year-old company does not exist is rather insulting. We wonder if The Times Ventura County Edition has a problem with recognizing theater that is anything other than “mainstream U.S.” Certainly, the larger Los Angeles Times allows room for diverse presentations.
