Loopholes in Prop. 34
* Re Capitol Journal, Oct. 2: Proposition 34 is full of loopholes and is designed to fool the voters into thinking they are getting campaign finance reform. What they are getting is the same old system in a new disguise.
Proposition 34 was written by politicians, for politicians. Voters know there is a need to control the influence of big campaign donors on the political process. This proposition allows virtually unlimited contributions to go to candidates through political parties. It makes money-laundering machines of the parties and will make it impossible to connect big-interest influence buyers with the candidates who receive the money.
Rather than reforming campaign financing, Proposition 34 will make a bad situation even worse. That is why the League of Women Voters is urging citizens to vote no on 34 on Nov. 7.
