Memorial for Plane Crash Victims Posed

Relatives of several victims of the Jan. 31 Alaska Airlines crash met in Port Hueneme on Tuesday to discuss plans for a permanent memorial marker.

The family members scouted a number of sites along the oceanfront, said Greg Brown, Port Hueneme’s director of community development.

“They’re just trying to determine where, if anywhere, they want to put a monument,” he said.

Flight 261 plunged into the Pacific Ocean off Anacapa Island, killing all 88 people on board.

Some relatives were interested in selecting former Port Hueneme Police Chief Steve Campbell as the facilitator between the victims’ families and Alaska Airlines, Brown said.

Campbell resigned abruptly in August, after less than three years on the job.

Alaska Airlines has agreed to compensate the facilitator, said airline spokesman Greg Witter.

“The families will decide. We have offered to provide financial support for whomever they want to fill that role,” he said.
