From Times Wire Reports

A device that uses shock waves to treat chronic heel pain, known as plantar fasciitis, won approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The pain is usually caused by an inflammation of tissues and can be a particular problem for athletes. The OssaTron, made by HealthTronics of Marietta, Ga., may be used on adults who have had the condition for at least six months and who have tried other treatments, such as cortizone shots and shoe inserts. HealthTronics said the device uses energy to prompt new blood vessel growth, which allows normal tissue cells to come in and repair the injury. It could be in use by November.
