McVeigh’s Bid for New Trial Rejected
A federal judge in Denver rejected a request for a new trial for bomber Timothy J. McVeigh, who claimed his own lawyer leaked inflammatory stories about him to the media to pique interest in the lawyer’s planned book. McVeigh was convicted of murder, conspiracy and weapon charges and sentenced to death in 1997 for the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Claiming that Stephen Jones failed to represent him adequately, McVeigh said Jones leaked his purported confession and promoted questionable theories about foreign terrorists. The judge said McVeigh failed to show that Jones’ book plans influenced the trial.
