Crash Victims’ Kin Hire Ex-Police Chief
Family members of victims from Alaska Airlines Flight 261 have retained former Port Hueneme Police Chief Steve Campbell as a facilitator.
Campbell will act as a liaison between families and the airline as plans for a permanent memorial marker develop.
“Hopefully my part can be to work in between the different agencies,” Campbell said.
Although salary and stipend details have yet to be worked out, Alaska Airlines has agreed to pay the cost of a facilitator.
Campbell, who resigned as police chief in August, said he felt the need to stay involved with the families, as he has since the day of the crash.
“I’m pretty attached,” he said. “You get to know the people personally, and yet I’m not part of the families.”
On Jan. 31, Flight 261 crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Anacapa Island, killing all 88 people on board.
