Election Prejudice

Share

Well, it’s happened. My neighbor, to whose home I have been, whose kids I have hired to dog sit and with whom I have had many a spirited political debate, has brought me to tears. With one question, “You would put a Jew in the White House?” he has devastated my naive, trusting feelings about being OK to be the only one in the neighborhood who doesn’t put up Christmas lights. When he remembered that my roots were different from his, he smiled and said, “Oh, I guess you would.” This one encounter brought back the memory of being told by one of my elementary school friends that she could play with me because her parents said I was a “good Jew.” How sad that in 35 years, I am still just OK because I’m a “good one.” I thought that this election was about policy. Obviously, that’s not all.
