Disney Online Auction Site Offering One-of-a-Kind Items
The Walt Disney Co. is cleaning its closets and making one-of-a-kind costumes, tickets and props available on a new Internet auction site launched in conjunction with EBay.
The company’s Walt Disney Internet Group already operates a co-branded auction site with EBay that allows collectors to buy and sell items among themselves. The new site, which debuted this week, offers only items being sold directly by Disney, including letters from the Disneyland marquee that greeted visitors to the flagship California amusement park in Anaheim from 1989 to 1999.
The winning bidder for the galvanized steel sign also will have to pay shipping costs, which could range from $1,150 to $11,150, depending on the distance.
“It’s just trying to be practical and bring a new revenue stream with things we weren’t going to be able to display,” said George Grobar, vice president of Disney Auctions.
Among the other items Disney is auctioning are tickets to the premiere of its live-action film “102 Dalmatians,” which will be released at Thanksgiving; a copy of the Disneyland News newspaper from the park’s opening day in 1955; and costumes and props from the original “Mickey Mouse Club.”
