* Wednesday, the National Assn. of Realtors will report on sales of previously owned homes during September.
* Thursday, the Labor Department will issue the employment cost index for the third quarter, which is a gauge of the cost of wages and benefits for businesses. It is expected to have risen 1% in the period, the same as the second quarter, analysts said.
* Sometime this week--the date hasn’t been set--the Treasury is expected to report a budget surplus of $60.3 billion for September, putting the annual budget surplus for the fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, at $231 billion, analysts said. That will be the government’s third consecutive annual budget surplus.
