Penn State’s football team is off to its worst start in 36 years, but it has the support of the faculty.

The University Faculty Senate approved a resolution to denounce “negative cheering.” The anti-booing resolution will be read before every game at Beaver Stadium.

“I think as soon as they make that announcement there’s going to be a chorus of boos,” said Matt Brinker, a Penn State senior.

While some people might feel making their displeasure known from the stands is an American tradition, officials feel it has gotten out of hand during the Nittany Lions’ 3-5 start. Penn State has lost only five games in a season 12 times in 114 years.

“We hope the students will get behind this, too,” said Scott Kretchmar, the faculty NCAA representative who drafted the measure. “One thing that has to be clear is that it’s not any attempt to have us be quiet regarding Penn State.”
