An Air Force jet on a training flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday about 1 1/2 miles off the New Jersey coast.

The pilot was rescued by a New Jersey State Police boat and taken to a hospital for observation, said Staff Sgt. Barbara Harbison of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The pilot reported a problem with the oil pressure on the F-16 just before the engine failed about 3:40 p.m. and the jet went down, department spokesman Ray Martyniuk said.

It was the third U.S. crash this month involving an F-16.
