Supersax’s Birdland

Don Heckman, in asking “Why haven’t [Charlie] Parker’s contributions received greater acknowledgment?” (All That Jazz, Aug. 25), failed to mention that magnificent musical shrine created by the recordings of Supersax.

Med Flory and his Supersax band learned most of Bird’s improvised jazz solos, harmonized them for five saxes, and then rerecorded them with great fidelity to Bird’s original sound, phrasing, feeling, tempos, etc., which required top-level technical skills. That represents a glorious musical tribute.
