CSUN Clinic to Treat Anxiety Disorders
An Anxiety Clinic has opened at CSUN to serve the community and provide hands-on training for psychology students.
The clinic is staffed by six to eight graduate students in the Psychology Department master’s program in clinical health. It plans to serve up to 50 clients a semester.
The students will be under the supervision of CSUN professor Ronald Doctor, a clinical psychologist who has worked in the area of anxiety disorders for 30 years.
Doctor said that although college counseling clinics treat the problem, CSUN is among the few schools, which include the University of Pennsylvania and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, offering such services to the public.
The clinic is located in Monterey Hall on the northwest corner of Nordhoff Street and Zelzah Avenue. It offers two-hour diagnostic interviews for $80 and weekly individual consultations for $40 an hour.
“We wanted to make it something useful to the community,” Doctor said, “something for people who can’t afford an ongoing service or who don’t want to be stuck on drugs all the time.”
Doctor said an increasing number of his students are interested in working with those suffering from anxiety disorders, “a term which didn’t exist” when he entered the field.
