Beuerlein’s Effort Not Isolation Play

Reading about Steve Beuerlein’s efforts in raising awareness for ALS [Aug. 23] was not surprising to those of us who have come in contact with this selfless person.

In my 15 years as a hospital administrator in Southern California, Steve Beuerlein’s compassion left me with one of my most enduring memories. About 10 years ago, Beuerlein was at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach two days before Christmas during a visit with Athletes and Entertainers for Kids.

There was one critically ill child on our cancer unit whom the nurse told us was not expected to make it through the night. Beuerlein, in his Santa hat and with gift in hand, asked whether he could pay a visit to the child. Because the boy was in so much pain, they only reluctantly agreed. As Beuerlein entered the room, for the first time in more than a week, the little boy sat up in bed. Beuerlein spent quite a bit of time with the boy and by the time he left, he had gotten him to smile. His nurse and family were moved to tears.

Sadly, the nurse was correct. That little boy didn’t survive the night. I’ve long forgotten his name, but I’ll guarantee that his family has always remembered the name Steve Beuerlein.
