Motorola Inc., one of the biggest makers of semiconductors, promoted Fred Shlapak to president of its chip unit, permanently replacing Hector Ruiz, who left in January to join Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Shlapak, 56, takes over from Fred Tucker, who served as interim chip-unit president after Ruiz left. Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola also promoted senior vice president Bill Walker, 57, to general manager of the unit. Motorola fell 32 cents to close at $34.75 on the New York Stock Exchange.
