Market Fire Spurs Rioting by Traders

Police used tear gas and clubs to subdue thousands of frustrated traders who rioted after a mysterious fire in the Kenyan capital’s sprawling Gikomba market reduced their stalls and inventory to ashes. The protesters, many of whom had seen their livelihoods destroyed, rampaged through narrow streets that normally bustle with commerce. The fire consumed millions of dollars worth of inventory. It was the second major market fire in Nairobi in the last 10 days.
