* American Express Co. said it will offer disposable credit card numbers for safer online shopping. The program, called Private Payments, would allow consumers to buy online without transmitting actual card numbers over the Internet. For each online purchase, the customer would get a random number, which would expire after the transaction. The service will be available next month to American Express consumer and small-business card holders in the U.S.

* Kraft Foods said it has pulled the Jell-O advertising account from Young & Rubicam Inc. after more than 74 years. Kraft awarded the account to another of its ad agencies, Foote, Cone & Belding, citing a desire to try a new approach.
