25,000 Fleeing Flooding, Landslides

About 25,000 people in the Mekong Delta were being evacuated from flooded homes threatened by landslides, officials said. Seasonal flooding, which has engulfed southern Vietnam’s rice bowl since July, hit the provinces of Dong Thap and An Giang particularly hard, with 8,500 already evacuated. In Dong Thap province, 16,700 people were being moved from waterlogged dwellings, while 4,400 others were being evacuated because of landslides along the Mekong River, said Bui Dinh Tu, a flood control committee member. In An Giang province, more than 3,000 were being evacuated to higher ground, officials said.
