A California state judge declined Thursday to block presidential hopeful John Hagelin from campaigning under the Reform Party’s banner.

A faction of the party aligned with rival Pat Buchanan had asked Long Beach Superior Court Judge James L. Wright to force Hagelin and his loyalists to stop a broad array of political activities.

Wright refused to do so after meeting privately with lawyers for both sides.

The Reform Party split at its convention last month in Long Beach, producing Buchanan and Hagelin as its nominees for president. The Federal Election Commission is considering who should get $12.6 million in federal funds earmarked for the party.
