Sophomore setter Jamie Pilbeam set an NCAA record with 107 assists Thursday, helping UC Irvine to an 18-16, 15-8, 14-16, 15-6 victory over Texas San Antonio in the USC tournament.
Later in the day, the Anteaters (3-0) rallied to beat Rhode Island, 6-15, 15-8, 15-2, 15-10.
The previous record for assists in a four-game match was 95 by Renata Menschikova of Central Florida in 1997. Pilbeam also bettered her school record of 84 set last season against Brown.
The team set an NCAA mark for assists in a four-game match, and tied the NCAA record for kills. The Anteaters’ 109 assists topped the old mark of 100 set by Purdue in 1996 and San Diego State in 1993, and their 109 kills tied San Diego State’s total set in 1993.
In the UC Irvine men’s soccer invitational:
Cal State Fullerton 4, Missouri Kansas City 3--Tim Donnelly, Art Ramirez, Kris Hulgreen and Shaun Higgins each scored for Fullerton at Titan Stadium.
