Box Office Boo-Boos

Re “Summer Slump” (by Richard Natale, Sept. 5):
One reason for the slump that I did not see mentioned in your article is the incredibly high prices at the box office. It has become a major financial outlay to go to movies, especially if you pay for two or (gasp) your whole family. Prices just keep going up and up. This makes video/DVD rental and pay-per-view that much more attractive to the common folk.
If the studios want to lure more people back into the theaters, they must take responsibility for creating the high ticket prices that keep many of us away.

The article seemed to lay the blame for the decline in attendance and of receipts at movies this summer to a trend of redoing previous movies and stories.
There are a couple of other reasons for that “slump” that come quickly to mind. One of the main ones, besides the increasing cost of attending movies, is the continuing deterioration of the quality of the product being offered. Moral garbage needs to be eliminated and more positive and wholesome elements emphasized, if a growing number of us seniors are going to continue or return to supporting the motion picture industry.
