Severe flooding and strong winds brought on by a tropical storm have left 42 people dead in North Korea and caused extensive damage to crops, a U.N. official said. The deaths occurred when rivers burst their banks in the northeastern province of North Hamgyong, said David Morton, the United Nations’ coordinator for humanitarian aid to North Korea. Morton said in a statement sent to news agencies that U.N. staff saw widespread damage from the storm, which ravaged the Communist country’s east coast for 27 hours beginning the night of Aug. 31.
