FEC Expected to Give Buchanan $12.6 Million
The Federal Election Commission is expected to award a $12.6-million subsidy to Reform Party presidential candidate Pat Buchanan on Tuesday, but a rival candidate within the splintered party said Friday that he would move his fight to federal court.
“The FEC is trying to get this off its plate,” said Bob Roth, a spokesman for John Hagelin, a presidential candidate of both the Reform and Natural Law parties. “We are heading to the courts, where we always knew we would end up.”
Saying Hagelin had failed to establish eligibility to receive the subsidy, staff lawyers recommended that Buchanan receive it, according to a report to the six-member commission released Friday.
Both Hagelin and Buchanan claimed the party’s presidential nomination after an acrimonious split last month at the Reform Party convention in Long Beach.
