* Re “Archbishop Salutes a Mentor at Class Reunion,” Sept. 10: As a member of the St. Charles Borromeo eighth-grade class of 1956, I read with interest the account of Cardinal Roger Mahony’s 50th reunion. My memories of St. Charles differ somewhat from those recounted at the reunion. I remember undertrained teachers trying to manage (let alone teach) huge classes of 50 students. I remember creativity being sacrificed for conformity. I remember the emotional and physical abuse of children.

Catholic school education in the 1940s and 1950s was problematic, to say the least. I wish that the article had been more honest and more respectful of the experiences of my St. Charles classmates.
