The Actors’ Plight

Thank you, Brian Lowry, for your very perceptive column (“Cast Away the Idea of Paying Dues,” Sept. 12). For years, I have been biting my tongue and gritting my teeth with suppressed frustration at the endless parade of non-actors invading the membership rolls of my unions.

No doubt Mssrs. Taft and Hartley are revered in some circles, but when their legislation allows any athlete, felon and rat-eating refugee from some mindless network executive’s desk doodling to take a job away from me, perhaps it is time to change the “A” in SAG to “P,” and call ourselves the Screen Personalities Guild.
