Moreno Verdict a Tragic Case

* Re “Corruption in High Places” (Orange County Perspective, Sept. 10):

Councilman Ted R. Moreno went against the establishment and was destroyed as predicted.

I personally am ashamed that the community as a whole did not counsel and guide him in the right direction. In the last few months of his term in the council, he was very close to a nervous breakdown. I don’t blame his colleagues for being afraid, but what Moreno needed was psychological attention and not incarceration.

* After allegedly defrauding thousands of property owners out of millions of dollars from insurance settlements, former Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush is free and moving to Hawaii. After an elaborate sting operation by the FBI and Justice Department, Moreno is charged and convicted of accepting illegal contributions from a paid FBI informant.

Quackenbush was richly rewarded by the insurance companies in return for favors granted. Moreno, in an attempt to win majority control of the Santa Ana City Council to better represent the needs of working families, is trapped with the use of FBI money and aggressively prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This confirms a sad and shameful reality about our judicial system: There is a double standard in the application of justice between whites and minorities.
