The Ventura County chapter of the Alzheimer’s Assn. is sponsoring the eighth annual Memory Walk to benefit the association next Sunday. The four-mile walk is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at San Buenaventura State Beach.

About 1,000 county residents are expected to walk in support of the more than 12,000 people in Ventura County who are affected by Alzheimer’s. Last year the walk raised almost $70,000, and this year’s goal is $100,000.

“This is a major fund-raiser for the year,” said Sandra McMullen, a program director for the association. “We use the money to provide educational material, classes, support groups and counseling for both family members and for people who have the disease.”

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the walk. Admission includes a barbecue lunch and a raffle ticket, along with music and entertainment. All proceeds from the walk will go toward the Alzheimer’s Assn.’s local programs.

Participants are encouraged to raise money before the event. Prizes will be awarded to the person who raises the most money.

Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) is the honorary chairman of the walk. He is also a member of the Congressional Alzheimer’s Task Force.
