The Planning Commission unanimously voted last week to adopt an ordinance that addresses cellular phone poles.

This decision was in response to the moratorium on antennas imposed by the City Council in June.

City planners expect to have the new ordinance--aimed at streamlining the application process and standardizing requirements for companies that install cellular antennas--in place before the council’s Oct. 4 meeting. The new rules will lift the council’s halt on processing applications for such equipment.

Cell phone antennas have proliferated throughout the region, said Planning Director Brian Fisk, who said the city has received at least 10 such applications in the last year.

“The council finally decided they wanted to see more specific restrictions,” Fisk said. Before, “there was nothing specific about screening them, distances, which zones they could be in.”

Fisk said other cities are adopting similar regulations.
