Eagle on Par-Four Propels DiMarco to Six-Stroke Win

Chris DiMarco shot a two-under 69 Sunday to win the inaugural Pennsylvania Classic at Paoli, Pa., by six strokes and earn his first victory on the PGA Tour in 159 career starts.

“It’s all about winning,” said DiMarco, a 32-year-old Floridian who had two second-place finishes this year. “Winning is it out here. It’s the greatest feeling. It’s what you hit those extra balls for on the range.”

DiMarco had a four-stroke lead after he holed out an eight-iron from 143 yards for an eagle on the par-four third hole. DiMarco finished at 14-under-par 270.

The tournament was missing many of the big names in golf, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.

Hubert Green shot a six-under-par 64 to win the Kroger Senior Classic at Mason, Ohio, by one shot and prevent Larry Nelson from winning a third successive Senior PGA Tour event.

Green started the day two strokes behind Nelson and one behind Gil Morgan. Green’s second victory of the season was worth $210,000, boosting the 53-year-old’s season earnings to $1,174,412 for his first $1 million season.

Nelson, who had won his last two starts before taking last week off, shot a 67 to fall just short of becoming the first senior tour golfer to win three consecutive tournaments since Morgan in 1997.

Cycling

Nicole Reinhart, a two-time U.S. National Track cycling champion, was killed when she was thrown from her bicycle and struck a tree during a race in Cambridge, Mass.

Reinhart, 24, of Mertztown, Pa., was in the final 3 1/2-mile lap of the BMC Tour of Arlington when the accident occurred. The race was the final event of the 17-race Saturn Professional Tour, which Reinhart was leading.

The men’s race, scheduled to begin after the women’s race, was canceled.

Miscellany

Deposed Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight, attending a Cardinal baseball game in St. Louis over the weekend, said he has legitimate offers from both college and professional teams and says he could be back coaching next month.

“It isn’t for sure I’m not going to be coaching by Oct. 15,” Knight said, referring to the start of the college practice season. “I’ve got some things I can do. I’ve got to see what commitment I can make.”

Henderson Hill, the lawyer for Deidra Lane, complained that FBI agents intended to inflict pain when they arrested his client in Charlotte, N.C., by pulling over the car in which she was riding with her children, ages 11 weeks and 4 years. The 25-year-old widow of NFL running back Fred Lane has been free on bond on a murder charge in her husband’s July 6 shooting death before her arrest Friday on a bank larceny charge that Hill said was two years old.

Newly naturalized citizen Kahlid Khannouchi, 29, who set the world marathon record last year while competing for his native Morocco, won his third Philadelphia Distance Run title, completing the 13.1-mile half-marathon course in 1 hour 1 minute 17 seconds.
