* Re “Teen Driver Law Reduced Accidents, Report Says,” Sept. 14:

I find it very hard to believe that teenagers’ accidents were down because of the new law, especially in the first year the law took effect. The study, in my opinion, was incomplete. Fewer teenage drivers were on the road. With the old law, a teenager applied in January and, if all went well, by February he’d be driving. With the new law, it would be sometime in July before he’d be driving on his own--therefore eliminating a large percentage of teenage drivers who would otherwise have been on the road. All of a sudden accidents are down.

This is just another feel-good law that doesn’t really address the problem. I’m not against more driving practice for teenagers before they get their licenses. The attitude of the driver and lack of parental responsibility contribute to the majority of accidents.
