L.A. Controller to Withhold $600,000 From Democrats

The city controller announced Wednesday he is withholding nearly $600,000 from the $4 million in payments the city agreed to make to the Democratic National Convention because he believes the expenses are unjustified.

“The council, as provided by the [City] Charter, may overrule me on this matter and request that some or all of this amount be issued,” Controller Rick Tuttle wrote in a letter to city lawmakers. “I am unwilling to issue this remaining payment without further council instructions.”

In June, the council voted to spend $4 million to support the efforts of Los Angeles’ convention planning committee. The council instructed that $2 million be transferred immediately. The remainder was to be held in reserve to cover convention deficits.

Tuttle said he believed that the planning committee showed proof that it had a $1.4 million deficit, but could not justify the remaining $600,000.
