Things to do this weekend with your money:
Tax-related deadlines are coming up, making this a good time to review your tax situation.
* Today: Oct. 1 is the deadline to set up a Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) retirement plan. The plans allow contributors to set aside $6,000 a year for retirement, and might be a good option for the self-employed and small businesses. IRS Publication 560 has the details; call the IRS at (800) 829-1040 or visit its Web site at https://www.irs.gov to download a copy.
* Saturday: Oct. 16 is the final deadline for taxpayers who got extensions in April and August for their 1999 federal and state tax returns. No further extensions are available.
* Sunday: Check your withholding. Making adjustments now can save you a big tax bill and possible penalties on April 15. Quicken has a tax estimator at https://www.quicken.com/taxes/estimator and the IRS has a W-4 calculator at https://www.irs.gov/prod/ind_info/webw4 /index.html.
