Day Laborer Center Funded by Donations
While other Southland cities and the county of Los Angeles have tried to enact restrictions banning day laborers from their streets, Azusa is taking another course.
Local businesses and residents have donated an estimated $40,000 in materials to build a day laborer center in an industrial part of town near Irwindale, officials said. The site will have two shelters, restrooms and a drinking fountain, said City Councilwoman Diane Beebe.
Officials hope the project will resolve residents’ complaints about the workers loitering, drinking and urinating in public in the neighborhood around Pasadena and Gladstone streets.
“People weren’t trying to ban them from working,” said Beebe. “They recognize there is a need for that. This is a nice solution to the issue.”
