Grants Will Take Kids to Symphony

The New West Symphony of Thousand Oaks has received a $25,000 grant from the state Department of Education and a $15,000 grant from the Times Mirror Foundation to support its annual Symphonic Adventures program.

The program attempts to enhance music education through a series of concerts for children throughout Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The grant benefits third- through fifth-grade students at schools previously not involved in Symphonic Adventures.

The state grant will be used to pay for tickets and busing for children, as well as fund professional development for teachers with symphony musicians.

“With these funds, Symphonic Adventures can offer more children an opportunity to experience instrumental music in a hands-on, creative way,” said Lynn Decker-Mahin, the symphony’s education director. “Children will get to explore instruments from the four families of brass, strings, woodwinds and percussion and attend a live symphonic performance in a concert hall.”

Participating schools are encouraged to host ensemble groups from the symphony. Ensemble musicians will share their expertise with teachers and students.

The symphony relies on events, private and corporate donations, and grants to fund about two-thirds of its $1.6-million annual budget.
