Finland’s Crew Already Has a Gold in Control

Finland’s crew of Thomas Johanson and Jyrki Jarvi clinched the gold medal in sailing’s 49er class with a practically perfect showing.

The crew took third, first and second to guarantee first place overall.

Their performance blew away the brothers Jonathan and Charlie McKee of Seattle, who still have a shot a silver after their worst day of the regatta aboard their winged skiff, with finishes of seventh, sixth and 11th.

“It was a little trickier and a little more random out there today,” skipper Jonathan McKee said. “The Finnish guys just handled it amazingly.”

Finn skipper Russ Silvestri of Tiburon, Calif., finished 18th in his second fleet races to drop to eighth overall.

Star sailor Mark Reynolds of San Diego took third in his second race to stand 10th overall.

Australia’s Darren Bundock and John Forbes clinched the silver medal in the Tornado class, a day after Austria’s Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher clinched the gold.

The American crew, John Lovell of New Orleans and Charlie Ogletree of Newport Beach, Calif., have no shot at the bronze. They won Saturday’s 10th fleet race, but were disqualified after a protest hearing Saturday night. The jury ruled that the Americans failed to give New Zealand room to pass a mark.
