Russia closed out the fencing competition by beating France, 45-32, to win the men’s team sabre gold medal.

“We had a strong team,” Russia’s Alexei Frossine said. “It was our main event for the competition and we feel great happiness. The last tussle put some psychological pressure on us, but not too much.”

Germany defeated Romania, 45-27, to take the bronze.

Russia won four medals in fencing, including gold in men’s individual epee and women’s team epee.

The Russians won seven of the nine bouts in the team sabre final and had draws in the other two.

Stanislav Pozdniakov, who surprisingly failed to medal in the individual event, won three of his bouts.

France’s Damien Touya, the 1999 world champion, lost his three bouts.
