Bush on Education

* Re Michael Ramirez’s Sept. 27 “Prescriptions” cartoon on Al Gore: I would like to suggest that Ramirez apply the same truth serum to George W. Bush for his exaggeration regarding Texas’ education results. Investigation has shown that the emphasis is training students for passing tests, not on comprehension and enrichment in learning. Apply the truth serum for his inaccuracy in his own record of fund-raising. This list could go on for pages.

* Bush has put forward his education program, pointing with pride at his record in Texas. How well were the products of Texas schools educated? A standard for judging educational achievement used by practically every major university is the SAT test. Under the much-lauded educational leadership of Bush, the ranking of students from Texas on the SAT has fallen from 41st to 47th.
Perhaps this can be understood as resulting from his tax-and-spending approach. In his administration taxes have been very low, so per capita spending on public education has been low and spending for teachers’ salaries has been among the lowest in the country. Is this what we want for the nation?
