A Stanton man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly starting a fire that gutted the home and a trailer where he and nine others lived, a fire official said.

The 34-year-old man, who was not identified, was being held at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of arson, said Capt. Kirk Summers, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

Eight adults and a 12-year-old girl received food, clothing and shelter from the American Red Cross.

The blaze began when the man burned what appeared to be paper in his bedroom shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday, Summers said.

“Our investigators know that he definitely started the fire,” Summers said. “But why, exactly? They’re still looking for that piece.”

The flames spread rapidly from the four-bedroom house to an adjacent parked travel trailer where a man lived, he said. Summers said the loss was estimated at $200,000. A neighbor’s house suffered minor damage.

About 20 firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority and Anaheim Fire Department battled the blaze for 30 minutes.
