Thieves who allegedly cut wires to an alarm system at a Santa Ana jewelry mart this week made off with about $500,000 worth of jewelry, police said Thursday.

Officers arrived about 5 a.m. Tuesday at the Plaza Jewelry Mart in the 3700 block of Bristol Street after someone called to report seeing a person inside the business, which was closed.

The mart is leased to 14 jewelry stores and is not open Mondays.

When officers arrived, they found that the phone lines had been cut to disable the security system and that seven jewelry stores inside the building had been ransacked, Officer Mario Corona said. The thieves were gone.

“This appears to be the job of very sophisticated burglars,” Corona said.

“There was no sign of forced entry into the business, and they have to know a lot about alarm systems to know where to cut.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Santa Ana police at (714) 245-8715.
