Thousands of people massed in St. Petersburg in a show of support for journalists at NTV--Russia’s only national independent television network--who claim the Kremlin is crushing free media.

Police said 4,000 people thronged Troitskaya Square, waving placards that declared, “No TV without NTV!” On Saturday in Moscow, 10,000 people turned out to denounce Tuesday’s boardroom coup at NTV by state-dominated natural gas giant Gazprom, a major NTV shareholder.
