Arturo Porras; Longtime Resident, Korea Veteran

Arturo “Art” Porras died of cancer at his Santa Paula home Tuesday. He was 69.

Porras, who worked for the Sheet Metal Workers Union and taught at Ventura College, was born June 16, 1931, in El Paso. He was a Ventura County resident for the last 60 years.

He graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1950 and lettered in varsity football and track. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War.

Porras retired after 32 years working for the Sheet Metal Workers Union, where he also served as secretary of the union’s treasury.

He was a graduate of Ventura College and UCLA, where he received teaching credentials. He taught industrial arts at Ventura College.

Porras was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Paula and served as a religious teacher, Eucharistic minister and handyman for various church projects.

He enjoyed traveling to Manadero, Mexico, to help a religious group.

Porras is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alice Luque Porras; sons Arthur R. and Michael A. Porras; daughters Laura L. Porras and Elizabeth M. Murrillo; brothers Profilio, Artemio, Henry and Richard; sisters Mary Antunez, Velia Newport and Patsy Whiteside; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Pierce Bros. Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula, which is handling the arrangements. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

A Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at the church.
