Nicolas Clermont; Producer of International Films

Nicolas Clermont, 59, the producer of some of Canada’s best-known films. Born in Neuilly, France, Clermont began his career in the 1960s as an assistant director and assistant producer in France. After moving to Montreal in 1968, Clermont became involved in producing and directing educational documentaries and programs for television. In the 1980s, he co-founded Filmline International, which became one of Canada’s leading production firms and a pioneer in co-producing features with other countries. “Bethune: The Making of a Hero” in 1990, starring Donald Sutherland as pioneering doctor Norman Bethune, was the first film co-produced by a Canadian firm--Filmline--and China. Clermont also produced the Irish drama “This Is My Father” with Aidan Quinn, James Caan and Stephen Rea; “Free Money” with Marlon Brando and Mira Sorvino; “Eye of the Beholder,” a thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd, and the top-grossing Canadian film of 2000, “The Art of War,” starring Wesley Snipes. On Wednesday of cancer at his home in Montreal.
