Serbs in northern Kosovo, angry over U.N. efforts to collect taxes on goods entering the province, blocked several roads and staged a peaceful protest rally.

More than 4,000 people gathered in the main square of the divided city of Kosovska Mitrovica and marched to the nearest roadblock to join in the action. They said tax collection points on the roads suggest that Kosovo is an independent state--something they reject.

Kosovo--a province of Serbia, the dominant Yugoslav republic--has been run by the United Nations since June 1999.
