* Prudential Insurance Co. of America, the No. 2 U.S. life insurer by assets, took over failed Kyoei Life Insurance Co. for about $1.2 billion, gaining a larger presence in Japan. Newark, N.J.-based Prudential said Kyoei Life, which recently went through bankruptcy proceedings, was renamed Gibraltar Life Insurance Co. Prudential said it paid about $403 million and provided a subordinated loan of about $790 million.
