Judge Won’t Free Golf Range Owner

John M. Thoburn, who has sat in the Fairfax County, Va., jail for two months for refusing to plant more trees at his Reston golf range, asked a judge again to be freed pending a June 5 zoning hearing.
The judge refused.
“The last thing I want to do is keep Mr. Thoburn in jail,” said Circuit Judge Michael P. McWeeny. But, he added, previous court orders and other legal constraints force him to do just that until Thoburn either plants the trees or closes his driving range.
