Oliver Robert Dwight; Retired Electrician

Oliver Robert “Rusty” Dwight, a longtime county resident and electrician, died Saturday at his Camarillo home. He was 83.

Dwight was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Los Angeles.

He was a descendant of John Dwight, who came to America on the second sailing of the Mayflower in 1634.

After graduating from Covina High School in 1936, Dwight began working as an apprentice electrician in Baldwin Park. Two years later, he worked for Weaver Electrical in El Monte as a journeyman electrician.

When he was 26, he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and began working on construction jobs. He started the El Monte Electric Co., where he was a contractor until he moved to Ventura in 1952. He continued to work in the trade until he retired in 1976.

Dwight was a member of the El Monte Elks Club, the Optimist Club, the Pleasant Valley Seniors in Camarillo, the National Rifle Assn., AARP and the IBEW Retirees Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Ellen, in 1976.

He is survived by son Daniel of Alaska; daughters Marilyn Huff of Santa Paula and Carolyn Warwick of Oxnard; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, which is handling the arrangements.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
